There are plenty of compelling reasons to opt for the official Ford extended warranty on your new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle. On the other hand, the only real reason to get an aftermarket warranty from someone else is because of price. However, this is one area where trying to keep costs down could end up costing you more in the long run.
First of all, an aftermarket warranty isn’t backed by Ford Motor Company. This is a big deal, because Ford is a successful and stable company with a solid reputation and strong financials, as well as dealers across the United States and Canada that will honor the Ford warranty. By contrast, your run-of-the-mill aftermarket warranty provider is a crapshoot. The company might be strong, but it could also just as easily be a fly-by-night operation that won’t even be in business by the time you need it to honor your warranty for a major repair.
Another significant difference is in the quality of care that you receive. The official Ford extended service plan offers you only genuine Ford parts and certified technicians at their dealers, but you might be getting less skilled labor and cheap knockoffs for parts if you go with an aftermarket warranty from somebody else. Unskilled labor and cheap parts could cause more damage to your vehicle, rather than fixing it. In the end, there’s no true substitute for a Ford extended warranty.
